Now that the Mont 24 is over, course planning for the Kowalski Classic has begun in earnest. We’re exploring some exciting terrain out beyond where we have built trails previously and it’s got us scratching chins and gesturing wildly. There are some steeps for sure, but there are also some stunning vistas as reward for a good climb. Rest assured, we’ll be stitching together a cracking course. Race day September 22. Feedback from this year’s Mont has been outstanding. There was a plethora of bike mad media there covering the event, but the crew from Flow Mountain Bike were the most visible and getting up to their usual antics — both on trail and off. They had a good time too. Here’s what they had to say.

The Captains of the Kow- ibean are looking for an enthusiastic single speeder to ride with them at the Mont. Aaaarrrr me Maties. Lock up yer rum, the Captains are sailing into the Port of Mont. Beware ye tar lubbers, walk the plank ye will! El Capitan Habanero, Captain Morgan, Captain Anyman, Black Beard, Captain Jack Sparrow/Turtleman, and the Parrot aaarrrrrrr recruiting mutinous deckhands to sail with us amongst the pines of the Kowibean for a lap. Mont Course Map

This design for this year’s course is complete, so without further ado, the map is HERE. We love the course – it contains many of our all-time favourite trails but there’s a real treat in store for those who riders who haven’t experienced the trails we built over in the Far East. These trails are in the front half of the course and we think they will put a smile on your dial. In order to get the Far East trails however, we have had to overlap the course — which could get tricky if you don’t have a bridge — We don’t have one yet, but we will by race day. Riders in one direction go up and over and riders coming across the track will go under and through. Look for the bridge near Front Nine and Aunty Flo. Neat!

The Course

The course is as follows: Miss Jane, Sunset Boulevard, Carver, Tutu, Wooly Wanderer, Haiku, Baldy Climb, Quickie, Love You Long Time, Stud Muffin, Damn Straight, Soggy Bottom, Drunken Noodle, Dead Straight, Angle Grinder, Carver Back Door, Carver, No Matter Where You Go There You Are, Front Nine, Aunty Flo, Li’l Sebastian, Crazy Horse, Snake in the Grass, Magic Mushroom, Nookie, Ground Shaker, SABN, Kowalski’s Sideshow, The Green Mile, Restless Natives, Love Child, Secret Squirrel, Kowalski’s Beer Garden and Last Call. Distance circa 20.3km.

The Start

The start this year will be a rolling one — yes, there will be no run start. Yes! There will be no run start! Yippee! Riders will assemble near the entrance to Stockyards trail, (to the East of the Event Centre). Once started, riders will head toward (then through) the Event Centre before heading up Seismic Road and into single track. First tracks are Mud Duck, Two Bridges, Love Child and the new Secret Squirrel, before coming down Kowalski’s Beer Garden and onto the course proper. Note: Beer Garden will be the perfect location to see your first rider coming through some sweetly carving single track.

The Kow Kids Race

ENTRIES FILLING QUICK!

Yes kids… there’s a race just for you and it’s more important than the one Mum or Dad are doing. Just bring your bike, helmet and your best cycle pants along and we’ll let you loose on a specially built track for some fun and games. Raynie from Cycle Education is organising the race and kids will be riding on a purpose-designed track. NOTE: This is a participation event and ALL children will receive a bag of goodies plus a Mont 24 Number Plate. PRE-REGISTER HERE

It is important that you complete all details for your entire team NOW. Team Captains, make sure your teams details are correct. CHANGES MUST BE MADE BY COB 26 FEB as race plates will be sent to the manufacturer shortly after. Go HERE to update your team details. Note: Plates will not be issued to non-existent riders (Rider 2, Rider 3 etc). No plate, no ride.

Yes, we’ve sold out. If you’ve missed out, do not fret as there is a good chance you can get yourself a ride on another team or even grab a full team entry in the next couple of weeks. We do get a few entries come up for grabs as people find out they have something else on that weekend (i.e. they are getting married and it slipped their mind, they just got posted to Weirdlandistan, general team fitness collapse etc).
